Typically when March comes around everyone is ready for the upsets, the brackets, and the madness that comes along with the March Madness tournament. We’re going to look at what to expect in the Women’s March Madness tournament.
The easiest thing to expect in this tournament is madness, your brackets busted on day one. The tournament will be entertaining and you will be at the edge of your seat during every game. You don’t truly feel the energy of March until you watch the first few games of the tournament but after that it is full throttle.
The big question this year is who will be the Cinderella story? Every year in both the men’s and women’s tournament there is a low seed who pulls off a crazy upset and goes on an unreal run. In a one game tournament style it is very easy for the much higher seed to lose, it’s very simple the lower seeded team is the much hotter team. Last year’s Cinderella story was the Creighton Bluejays, as a number ten seed they upset the number two seeded Iowa in the second round and the third seeded Iowa State in the Sweet 16. Their Cinderella run would come to end shortly after in the Elite Eight but regardless this was a Cinderella run to remember.
I’m not an expert but I think a rematch of the National Championship game from last year is very possible. Last year South Carolina beat UConn 64-49, the defending Champs are the number one seed and the defending runner-ups are a two seed. According to Espn brackets the Gamecocks are the favorite to win as they are picked in 45% of brackets. UConn is sitting at second with 8% of brackets having them winning. Rematch brewing? I think the possibility of a rematch is very high compared to other years as each team still has their firepower from last year. The Gamecocks are led by Aliyah Boston who is projected to be the number one pick in the upcoming WNBA draft and was on the All American team. Did I mention that they have not lost a game yet? This is an absurd run they are on right now and anyone would be lucky to stop this buzzsaw. As for UConn they are missing one of their star players Paige Bueckers who exploded on the scene as a freshman a few years ago. She is currently recovering from a torn ACL which she tore back in August. This is a big blow to one of the best teams in the country. We’ll see if they can repeat their success from last year’s tournament missing arguably their best player.
If I had to make a pick for this year’s tournament I think the clear and obvious answer is the South Carolina Gamecocks. I understand this is the Villina answer but I don’t see a team in this tournament that is stopping this undefeated buzzsaw. Regardless this tournament will be lots of fun and full of upsets but everyone should just sit back and enjoy the madness.
