The Continuing Interest In The “Friends” Franchise

Ever since the 1990s, Friends has been an extremely popular sitcom among teenagers and adults alike! It depicts the daily happenings of a close-knit group of six friends: Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, and Ross. Together, they go through everyday life (not to mention they find themselves in some very funny situations!) in New York City while finding out where they belong and experimenting with relationships and jobs.

The continuing interest in the Friends franchise stems from how relatable these characters are, even  in the present day. Even though Friends was created and produced in the mid-1990s and continued through the early 2000s, many can relate to the hilarious scenarios and shenanigans within this beloved series: dating people that don’t have the best reputations or falling in love with one of your best friends (SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN’T ALREADY SEEN THE SHOW! Rachel and Ross date during seasons 2 and 3 .. they break up, but realize they’re still in love with one another in season 10). The wisecracking comments from Chandler Bing, who later marries Monica Geller (Ross’ sister) in season 8 of the show, add to the comedic relief people can relate to and need in these times of COVID-19 i. It’s a show that one could watch over and over and still not get bored of!

The Friends franchise is still so popular that it runs in syndication on channels such as TBS and PHL17 daily. In season 1 of this popular comedy show, each star was making roughly $22,500 per episode. In season 2, this increased to $40,000 per episode. According to Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel Green, the entire cast ended up making one million dollars for each episode in season 10 (18 episodes total in final season – you do the math!). Obviously this show was huge in the ‘90s and early 2000s, and it’s even more popular now than ever!!

The Friends cast will soon be joining forces again for a reunion special in March 2021: the cast all shared the same photo in February 2020 announcing, “It’s happening!” signaling the much-needed reunion of these long-time stars. According to Friends star, Matthew Perry, the special will be aired this month to honor the series’ 25th anniversary.  It will be available on HBO Max, and I can only imagine just how many fans will be tuning in to watch! This will be the first time the full cast is together on stage since the last episode of Friends aired on TV in 2004.

So be sure to tune in for Friends on your local TV everyday — believe me, you will fall in love with the show, just like the millions of viewers that already have!
